Dragon Ball Super Episode 9 Plot Summary
On the last episode of Dragon Ball Super, Goku had just hatched a plan to use the Dragon Balls to summon Shenron and ask about the Super Saiyan God.
Dragon Ball Super Episode 9 begins with the Z Fighters retrieving the Dragon Balls from the prize room, and placing them on the deck of the cruise ship. Goku uses the Dragon Balls to summon Shenron, and he appears in all of his glory above the ship. As usual, Shenron is very powerful and intimidating – that is, until Goku says Beerus’ name. Shenron quickly wilts and looks around for Beerus – in a rare moment, even Shenron is afraid. Shenron sheepishly says hello to Beerus, and even apologizes for addressing Beerus from an elevated position.
Shenron explains that he is unable to summon the Super Saiyan God right away. He also explains that the Super Saiyan God is a figure who appears in the legend of the Saiyans, and does not currently exist. Shenron explains that the Super Saiyan God must be created, not summoned, and that he can provide instructions on how to create him. The instructions are as follows:
“When five Saiyans with righteous hearts join hands and pour their spirits into another righteous Saiyan, he shall become the God of Saiyans.”
With the instructions having been granted, Shenron hastily asks for permission to leave, and vanishes.
Piccolo points out that performing the ritual will be impossible because, although there are five Saiyans present, Vegeta does not possess a righteous heart. Chichi and Roshi defend Vegeta and say that he has changed, and now does possess a righteous heart. With that, Gohan, Trunks, Goten, Vegeta, and Goku join hands and attempt to transform Goku into the Super Saiyan God. Tremendous energy begins to radiate from the circle of Saiyans as power is infused into Goku.
Goku levitates into the air, and it seems that the ritual is succeeding. However, Whis steps in and explains that it’s not their energy that should be poured into Goku, but their hearts. Whis also points out that there should be six Saiyans total – five to provide their pure hearts, and a sixth the receive. Beerus, realizing the paradox, is ready to destroy Earth again. Then Videl appears, and tells the group that she is pregnant, and wonders if this could qualify as the sixth Saiyan.
The group gives the Super Saiyan God ritual another try, this time with Videl included. They try to pour their hearts into Goku, and after some effort, something different begins to happen. Gold, warm light begins to pour forth from each member of the group and into Goku. The gold light radiates into the sky, and the clouds, which have now also turned gold, begin to approach the ship in all directions. Then, blue ki starts to radiate and pour forth into Goku, as well.
A blue pillar of light shoots into the sky from the center of the group and expands outward, enveloping the entire ship and opening a massive hole in the clouds above. It begins to rain, the sun can be seen passing overhead several times, then it begins to snow. Brilliant gold light envelopes everything, and then the Super Saiyan energy dissipates from the other members of the group. Goku begins radiating red light. The ritual is over, and it was a success. Goku has transformed into the Super Saiyan God foretold in Beerus’ dream.
At first, Goku is obscured by the red energy of his newly obtained Super Saiyan God form. Once the energy dissipates, we get our first look at the changes that have taken place to his physical form. Goku’s hair and eyes are now red, he looks 10 years younger, and he is significantly leaner.
Dragon Ball Super Episode 9 concludes with Beerus giving Goku a slow clap, and the two facing one another in anticipation of what follows.
