Dragon Ball Super Episode 30 Summary

The last episode of Dragon Ball Super ended with Bulma activating the Super Dragon Ball radar, and explaining to Goku & Vegeta that they will need to travel to the center of Universe 7 to use it.

Dragon Ball Super Episode 30 begins with Goku & Vegeta flying through the air and discussing what criteria to use when selecting the last two fighters for their Martial Arts Tournament team. As they are discussing, Krillin suddenly appears from behind and flies up to meet them. Krillin tells Goku & Vegeta he heard about the tournament, and refers to it as a ‘picnic in space’. Vegeta gets angry at this characterization, and Krillin backs up his statement and explains that he heard about the tournament from Chichi, and she referred to it as a picnic. Apparently, it was Goku that told Chichi that it’s a picnic, knowing she would get angry if she knew it was a martial arts tournament.

Krillin tells Goku & Vegeta that he has already taken time off from work so he could join them. When Krillin finds out it isn’t really a picnic, Goku & Vegeta explain the entire backstory and the true nature of the tournament. Finally, after giving Krillin all of the context, Goku & Vegeta tell Krillin they need to select two more fighters for their five person team. Krillin asks who the third participant is, and Vegeta tells him it’s someone stronger than Goku named Monaka.

Krillin, Goku, and Vegeta continue to discuss who could fill the last two spots on the team. Majin Buu is suggested, but Vegeta points out that the evil Kid Buu is no longer a part of him. Goku insists Majin Buu is still very strong when he is serious. Goku also reminds Vegeta that Kid Buu as been reincarnated as a child with a good heart. He can’t participate because he’s too young, so Goku says that leaves Piccolo. Vegeta also suggests Gohan, but Goku tells Vegeta that Gohan never trains anymore and even lost his training uniform. Vegeta laments at this fact.

In the next scene, we see that Goku, Krillin, and Vegeta have traveled to Mr. Satan’s house to ask Majin Buu to participate. They are seated next to Buu on the couch, and give him an invitation while he reads a magazine with children’s cartoon characters on the cover. He doesn’t seem interested, and responds by saying he doesn’t like Beerus. Goku asks him again, but Buu says nothing. Krillin says it’s no use. Then, Goku has an idea.

Goku tries to pique Buu’s interest by promising him one of the wishes from the Super Dragon Balls if they win. Krillin points out they don’t even know if the Super Dragon Balls can grant multiple wishes. Goku explains to Majin Buu that these are very special Dragon Balls, more powerful than those of Earth. Krillin again expresses concern, questioning whether or not Goku even has the ability to make this decision. Having heard that the Super Dragon Balls can grant any wish, Majin Buu agrees to participate.

Just as Majin Buu agrees to participate, Mr. Satan is walking into the room carrying a tray of drinks. He is shocked that Majin Buu agrees, and drops the drinks on the ground as he runs over to the couch and throws his arms around Buu. Mr. Satan asks Buu what he intends to wish for, and urges him not to make it an evil wish. Majin Buu assures Mr. Satan he doesn’t even have anything to wish for because Mr. Satan takes such good care of him. He tells Mr. Satan that if they win, he’ll let Mr. Satan make the wish. Mr. Satan is very touched that Buu would participate in the tournament as a gesture of affection, and gives Buu a hug with tears in his eyes.

Back on Beerus’ planet, we see Beerus enjoying some Cup Ramen. Whis expresses that he has seen a change in Beerus’ character. First off, Whis finds it strange that Beerus would agree to a tournament with no personal benefit. Secondly, Whis points out that during the encounter with Frieza, it was uncharacteristic of Beerus to authorize turning back time to save Earth. Beerus and Whis reflect on some of the experiences they have shared with Goku, and Whis suggests that Goku and Beerus are birds of the same feather. Beerus insists Whis should not compare him to that ‘bufoon’, Goku.

Then, Beerus starts to question Whis. Beerus asks Whis why he decided to let Goku & Vegeta train on the Gods’ planet. Beerus specifically points out Whis let Vegeta come to train first, and only let Goku join in once Vegeta was stronger. Then, Beerus asks Whis if he is training Goku & Vegeta so they can fight him. Whis, with a coy expression on his face, insists that he is not. Then, Beerus tells Whis he is finished eating, and it’s time to fetch Monaka.

Back on Earth, Goku, Vegeta and Krillin are traveling to recruit Piccolo for the tournament. Goten and Trunks suddenly appear and fly up behind them. Apparently, Goten and Trunks have also realized that it’s not really a picnic. Goku laughs. Trunks urges them to let he and Goten participate. Vegeta says no, and explains that he knows Goten and Trunks would want to use their fusion to participate as Gotenks, and that is against the rules of the tournament. Vegeta tells them to train hard and become strong enough to participate on their own.

Suddenly, we see Gohan in the middle of an intense training session with Piccolo. Just as Goku had alluded to earlier, Gohan doesn’t even have his gi. Goku, Vegeta and Krillin arrive, and Gohan & Piccolo break from their training session to talk to them. Goku tells Piccolo they would like him to participate in the tournament, and we see Gohan with his head down, staring at the ground. Gohan looks up and pleads with Goku to let him fight. Goku seems surprised that Gohan is interested. Gohan explains that since the encounter with Frieza, he has realized the importance of being prepared to protect the people he loves. As a result, Piccolo has been training him from the ground up. Having heard this Goku has a change of heart and tells Gohan he can particpate, and that Whis will arrive in four days. Suddenly Gohan seems uncertain.

Gohan begins pacing back and forth and expressing ambivalence because of the timing of the tournament, citing the need to attend a conference. After a few more moments of contemplation, Gohan decides he cannot participate, after all. Goku tells Gohan not to worry about it, and to just leave the match to him and the others. Despite Goku’s levity, Vegeta and Piccolo do not see amused. Piccolo agrees to participate.

Back at Capsule Corp., Bulma is growing impatient waiting for Jaco to arrive. Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo arrive just in time to see Bulma freaking out.

Vegeta and Goku sit on the couch, and before he even has a chance to say it, Vegeta asks Goku if he is thinking about training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Goku laughs and says yes, but also notes that Dende is in the process of fixing it and that it will be ready the next day. Goku asks Piccolo if he’d like to join them. Piccolo declines, saying that hanging out with Saiyans is too stressful. Piccolo intends to train by meditating in peace, instead. Then, Vegeta tells Goku he’s not going in at the same time. Vegeta also points out that going in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber at this point will be minimally helpful anyway, because they are both near the limits of their strength. Goku insists even a tiny gain is worth the effort, because there are strong fighters like Monaka they must catch up to.

Dragon Ball Super Episode 30 ends with Goku finally convincing Vegeta to get three years worth of training done in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber before the tournament begins.
