Dragon Ball Super Episode 23 Summary

The last episode of Dragon Ball Super ended with Piccolo sacrificing himself to save Gohan from Frieza’s barrage of death beams.

When Dragon Ball Super episode 23 begins, we see an incapacitated Piccolo lying on the ground with a massive hole in his chest. He’s dead.

Back on Beerus’ planet, we see Goku and Vegeta training in the realm that resembles the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Whis observes their training session using the orb on his staff. Beerus continues to enjoy his pizza until there’s none left. He asks Whis for more – Whis tells him there’s none left, it angers Beerus and he begins giving off purple god ki. Whis tells Beerus there’s more, but in order to retrieve it, he needs his staff. Beerus relents, and agrees to end the training session so Whis can use his staff to get more pizza.

Whis ends the training session, and Goku and Vegeta suddenly appear. Whis uses his staff to retrieve the pizza, but only empty boxes appear. Goku and Vegeta admit to eating all of the pizza. This makes Beerus extremely angry, and he begins chasing Goku and Vegeta.

Now that he has his staff, Whis is finally able to receive Bulma’s urgent message about Frieza. Bulma explains to Beerus & Whis that Frieza has been resurrected, and that she needs to speak with Vegeta & Goku. Beerus instructs Goku to use Instant Transmission to return to Earth, but Goku still cannot sense Earth’s energy since it is so far away.

Back on Earth, Gohan digs deep to power up as much as he can. After some effort, he is able to go Super Saiyan again. As a result, he is able to generate enough energy for Goku to pick up on the energy signature back on Beerus’ planet. Vegeta places his hand on Goku’s shoulder, and Goku uses Instant Transmission to travel back to Earth.

Just as Frieza’s death beam is about to strike a killing blow against Gohan’s exhausted body, Goku and Vegeta appear and deflect Frieza’s attack. Frieza is delighted to see Goku again, and now he is ready to exact his revenge on the Saiyan that took his life.

Goku transports Piccolo’s body to Dende’s. He then tells Goten and Trunks to leave and go explain the situation at the lookout tower.

Goku asks Frieza how he was resurrected, and Frieza concedes the Dragon Balls are what allowed him to come back to life. Then, once again, Frieza recounts the parades and dancing bears that characterized his own personal hell. Goku tells Frieza it’s ultimately his fault he died, because if he had just stayed away from Earth, Trunks would not have ended up killing him.

Captain Ginyu interjects and empathizes with Frieza’s anger. Goku and Vegeta remember Ginyu’s name from Namek. Vegeta chuckles and remembers that Ginyu exchanged bodies with a frog. Vegeta’s laughter greatly annoys Captain Ginyu, and he descends to confront Vegeta. Without hesitation, Vegeta charges forward faster than Captain Ginyu can react.

“I bet if you’d stayed a frog, you wouldn’t have to die”, Vegeta says. Then, Vegeta powers up a ball of energy, and disintegrates Captain Ginyu before he has a chance to throw a single punch. Goku scolds Vegeta and tells him killing Captain Ginyu was unnecessary.

Frieza recognizes that Vegeta has become much stronger since their last encounter, but still seems to be unfazed. He then emerges from his transporter and above the battle field. Goku can sense that Frieza has become much stronger, and acknowledges this to Frieza. Frieza confirms Goku’s suspicions, telling Goku he has been doing a great deal of training since he was resurrected. Frieza tells Goku & Vegeta that he has gained power beyond imagination since their last encounter.

Frieza tells Goku that he was careless during their last encounter. This time, he tells Goku, Frieza will go straight to his final form. Moments later, Frieza does just that. Massive amounts of purple ki begin to emit from Frieza and he screams as he powers up. When his ki is released, he disintegrates the remaining soldiers in his army. When the smoke clears, we see Frieza has kept his word, and gone directly to his final form that we saw in Dragon Ball Z. We also see a massive crater has formed below Frieza caused by the release of his energy.

Goku can sense Frieza’s massive energy, and demands to know what kind of training he undertook to achieve it. Frieza just chuckles.

Frieza asks Goku if he intends to go Super Saiyan, and Goku tells Frieza there will be no need for him to go that far this time.

Dragon Ball Super episode 23 ends with Goku and Frieza assuming their fighting stances and staring each other down, preparing to fight.
